Lyle Bailey Obituary

Lyle Christian Bailey, 80, of Wytheville, Va., died peacefully in his sleep at home on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, after living with cancer since 2006. Lyle was born in Rustburg, Va., and was the 10th of 12 children of Oscar Taylor Bailey and Martha Kate Finch Bailey. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Myra Carwile, Martha "Sis" Booth, Oscar Taylor Jr., Claude Bailey and Gladys Campbell. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Ora Carr Bailey; and four daughters, Bonnie Agnew, Barbara Gilliam and husband, Burt, Sue Talbott, and Cynthia Walters and husband, Mike. He is survived by grandchildren, Ryan Agnew, Brandy Talbott, Jessica Walters, Olivia Talbott, Martha Walters and Andrew Walters. He is also survived by siblings, Iva Waller, Mildred Martin, Katie Mae Martin, Morris Bailey, Milton Bailey and Janice Driskill; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a medic in Germany during the Korean War. He retired after working with Pendleton Construction Company and English Construction Company where he helped build bridges in Virginia and the Carolinas during his 50 year construction career. He was a longtime faithful member of Wytheville Baptist Church. He enjoyed family, friends, work, gardening, fishing, and hunting; and he always had a smile. The family will receive friends at Wytheville Baptist Church from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008, and from 11 a.m. until the service begins at noon on Friday, September 19, 2008, also at the church. Interment will follow in West End Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Agape Food Pantry Inc., 405 W. Main Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382; American Cancer Society Wythe/Bland Unit, c/o Jean Lester, P.O. Box 958, Wytheville, Va. 24382; or Wytheville Baptist Church, 205 Church Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382. Barnett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
