William Curry Crews Jr.

1932 - 2008

William Curry (Bill) Crews Jr., of Roanoke, Va., died Sunday, September 14, 2008, in a local hospital. He was born August 20, 1932, in St. Augustine, Fla., a son of the late William C. Sr. and Ethel May King Crews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley King, of Sanford, Fla. Mr. Crews was a proud alumni of the University of Florida where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He remained a lifelong fan of the "Gators" and always tried to watch every football game. He moved to Roanoke over 45 years ago when he was transferred from Washington, D.C., while working for Otis Elevator. For many years Mr. Crews worked as an independent insurance agent and at the time of his death he was working as an agent for Paul Housman and Associates. In the 1970's he was briefly a co-owner of the Coffee Pot. He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Kazim Shrine Temple, and a longtime member of Hidden Valley Country Club. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Peggy; daughters, Margo Crews Underwood and husband, Clay, of Chesterfield, and Virginia E. Crews and boyfriend, Jerry Noble, of Arden, N.C.; son, William E. Crews and girlfriend, Melissa Foutz, of Roanoke; and granddaughters, Currie, Cole , Cayton and Campbel Underwood, all of Chesterfield. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty McDaniel, and Guilda Liles, both of St. Augustine, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Bill was a friend to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends, and his colleagues and clients. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 4504 Starkey Road, Roanoke, Va. 24014. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road. The family will receive friends following the service.
