Dear Kim and Family,
It is with a sad heart that I write to you to express my deepest sympathy of the passing of Rick. I was fortunate to have known Rick as an athlete, student and friend. Rick certainly made his mark on the world and was a positive influence on a number of people. I certainly know that I am a better person for having known him. Rick may have been stubborn at times but his heart was always golden.

Dear Britt, Ricky, and Billy: Thank you for sharing your dad with others. The three of you are a wonderful example of what kind of man your dad was. Dear Kim: Know in your heart what an example you are to others. Your faith and courage has inspired many through the last several days of mourning. Kim and Family, I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss. I first got to know Rick when I worked at Bailey Lumber Co. several years ago. Throughout the years, after that time, Rick never failed to give me a "cheery hello" whenever he saw me. Rick was a fine man who had the respect of everyone in the community. I want you to know that I was honored to have known Rick. We had met a few times on construction jobs. Always had people saying how good and honest of a man he was. He was definately a witness as to how a man should live and love his wife and children. I'm still in disbelief of his passing. But we know that heaven is much richer today with him there. Dear Kim & Family I and my family were very sorry to hear of Ricks passing. He coached my son Josh when he was in little league in Narrows and I will always remember you guys nick naming Josh after he had broken his thumb. You all called him Crash Dummy afterwards. I still smile and get a chuckle out of thinking about it to this day. I pray that God give you comfort in this very difficult time. Rick was a very unique person and very well loved by the community. Kim and family, Bob&Linda wei're so sorry to hear of Rick's death. I've known Rick since Granny Hardwick and I worked together at Virginia Markets, he and Rusty were always so polite and nice. I loved them then and always have. He bought a toyota camry from us a few years ago when Brittany started to V.T. We came to the church last night but cars were lined up backto the highway and the line going into the church was starting at the multi-purpose building and being on oxygen I knew I couldn't do that so we came back home but I wanted you all to know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. kim, its been a very long time since i have seen or talk to you or Rick but i want you to know the news of his death has absolutely blown me away and i just want to let you know my prayers are with you and your family. i remember rick as a great guy and from what i hear his life stands as a testament to the wonderful man he will be remembered as. may God bless you and keep you through these very tough times. I am so sorry I couldnt be there today. Rick had a very funny personality in high school and he made me laugh more times than I can even talk of. Every St Patricks day for as long as i have know Rick reminded me of him. It's crazy that that day each year was more of a reminder of his birthday to me than it was the holiday. Kim as you know I knew Rick all of my life from 1st grade on, I will never forget the little league baseball games to our Senior year when we were together. I have always loved Rick as a friend and the last few days I am remembering the good times we had together from Rabbit hunting our Senior year instead of Basketball to going Possum hunting in his black Chevrolet. I will never forget our friendship and will always be grateful that we grew up together. What wonderful parents you both are by the 3 great children you have raised. We are simply stunned by this unbelievable loss. I did not know Rick well, but we always heard about his love for life and his family through Mom and admired him from afar.
Joe and I last saw Rick at the Tech game in February, where he was his usual gregarious self, welcoming everybody and joking with them all. Even in such a short encounter, he had us laughing and laughing.
Rick's loving embrace of life and family serve as models for us all. We are thankful to have known him and to have been among his many, many friends.

On behalf of the Bailey family of Narrows (Margie Connie and Bob) I wanted to pass onto the entire Cook family our most sincere condolences. Rick was always there to help Connie's mom with small "fixer-upper" jobs at her home on Allen Street. We all followed his daughters many great accomplishments on the Va Tech womens basketball team. This is a time when we ponder the idea of why? and I can not tell you why, many times I often wonder why also.
