I want to share a few memories of Mike from my life. He became part of my world when I was very young, and from the very beginning he took me under his wing and accepted me as his own. He taught me so many things-how to change my oil, how to shoot, how to drive backhoes-and more importantly, he showed me how to be generous and to stand up for myself and others.

Even after he and my mother divorced, Mike kept me on his health insurance until I was 26, a gift of stability that I will always be grateful for.

His mother, Mawmaw Warner, was one of my inspirations for becoming a nurse, and I wish they could see that I am now a doctor of nursing.

I recently found a photo of us at my high school graduation, both of us smiling so wide it looked like our faces might burst. It remains one of my most treasured memories.

Although I was not mentioned in the obituary, I want Mike to know that I always considered him my stepdad. Mike taught me that family isn´t only about the blood in our veins, but also about the people we choose to keep in our lives.

Blood may be thicker than water, but you can´t create blood without that water.

He was my family in every sense of the word. I will never forget him or the love and care he gave me. He made a lasting imprint on who I am today, and for that I will always be thankful.

To Mike's Family, my deepest sympathy to each of you upon Mike's passing. I worked with him for many years in Roanoke and he was a great guy, even for an Earnhardt fan. I'd not seen him for a while, since he came to Lebanon to help out with his mechanical magic there. May the many good memories I know you have of him bring comfort to you in this time of loss.

I wanted to express my sincere sympathy to Mike's family. I worked with him in Roanoke at Verizon until my retirement in 2003. He was a great person always willing to help with anything that was needed. He was never too busy to answer a question or provide assistance. He always followed up on issues and got answers when required. He was a skilled mechanic that could fix anything!

What a loss you must feel!! I have not seen him in years, but have such fond memories of some jokes we played on our co-workers. He had a poker face and could pull them off so well. We'd discuss NASCAR racing & our dislike for one in particular - the #24 - we knew who we wanted to win but foremost who we DID NOT want to see win & had a lot of laughs. Each week, we'd have to analyze the race and I always looked forward to seeing Mike. I'm so shocked to hear of his sudden death as I'm sure you are, too, but they say the good die young and that is SO true in this case.

Take care -
Charmaine Carmack
