John Quist Obituary

John Alfred Quist, 87, of Lexington, Va., died Sunday, September 28, 2008. He was born April 12, 1921, in New York, N.Y., a son of the late Carl and Dorothy Quist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eva Quist; and his brothers, Oliver and Larry Foisey. He was an eight-year veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, including being a member of the crew on the carrier U.S.S. Lexington, when it was sunk in the Coral Sea. John worked in the telecommunication field including many years working with the local telephone company. He was a member of the Mountain City Lodge No. #67 in Lexington for over 50 years, a former member of the town of Lexington Planning Commission and Regional Planning Commission in the 60's, past-president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club, a master gardener, member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary and an avid chess and bridge player. Surviving are a daughter, Kathryn Berry and husband, Robert, of Rockbridge Baths; a son, James C. Quist, of Lexington; a brother, Robert Foisey; a sister, Eloise Veil; and three grandchildren, Craig Whiteside, Michelle Berry and Kelly Berry. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2008, at St. Paul's Anglican Church with Father Thomas McHenry officiating. The committal service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008, at Monterey Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450 or St. Paul's Anglican Church, Nelson & Davidson Streets, Lexington, Va. 24450.
