Carolyn Bright Obituary

Carolyn Sumrell Bright, of Roanoke, Virginia, died October 7, 2008. She was born on December 11, 1946, the daughter of Hugh Austin and Lucille Edwards Sumrell of Simpson, North Carolina. She is preceded in death by both her father and mother, Hugh and Lucille Sumrell, and her second-born child, Justin Hunter Bright. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Danny Lee Bright; her children, Barclay Spencer Bright Sr., Hunter Sumrell Bright, and Jordan Alexander Spencer; and her dear brother, Chris Austin Sumrell. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Madeline Jane Bright, Eleanor Jo Bright, Barclay Spencer Bright Jr., Hugh Austin Bright, Hudson Taylor Bright, Ethan Sumrell Bright, Mason Garrett Bright, and Kaylie Madison Spencer. Her children were her pride. Carolyn spent the bulk of her adult life as both a mother and a teacher in the Danville City Schools. As a teacher, she was a gifted tutor of elementary age children. Under her watch struggling students learned to read. Her family remembers her tireless commitment to after-school sessions with kids who needed extra help. She was at her best working one-on-one with students; extra sessions, special attention, and a dogged desire to teach well. She surely shined there, and the world is a better place because of it. As a mother, she threw herself headlong into the job of loving and serving her children, things that kids are proud of once they're old enough to realize and count the cost. She taught her children to read and write, and to speak clearly, skills she hoped would equip them to enter the world. She encouraged them all to excel, to be their best, and to leave their mark. In this life, Carolyn did suffer. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the earlier 1990's, she had her share of pain and setbacks. Consistent with her toughness, however, she embraced the fact that MS would likely mean a shorter life for her. She dealt with it well, and lived out a hope that Jesus would in fact heal her one day, that Resurrection is real and not simply the talk of preachers. In this hope she died and now lives an eternal life with her loving Savior, unencumbered and free, world without end. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Funeral Service-South Chapel. In addition, a service will be held in her honor on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Va.

I first heard of Carolyn's many gifts when she was working at GLH Johnson Elementary School. She worked with my mother's second grade students as a reading resource teacher. My mother sang her praises and spoke of her with such high regard. I also had the opportunity to get to know her through mutual friends and understood why she was so deeply loved. Her diagnosis of MS didn't stop her from being there for everyone; especially her family and friends. Although I have not lived near Danville for many years, I continued to keep up with her through friends. I was deeply saddened to hear of her death and my thoughts and prayers are with all of those who love and miss her. She touched many lives while she was with us and will continue to enrich us with her memory.

Dear Chris and family,
I was SO sorry (and shocked) to see Carolyn's obituary in the Greenville paper. Even though I only met Carolyn a couple times, I felt like I knew her from all the conversations with your Mom. She obviously was a wonderful person and had so many friends who truly admired her. So many things to be proud of. I miss your Mom too...she was fun to work with!

Danny, Barclay, Jordan, Hunter & Chris - my heart, like yours, is heavy as I realize we have bid farewell to Carolyn - for now. Surely she smiled on the beautiful service in her honor.Although we didn't see each other as often over the last few years, we were still kindred spirits. She's the only person I ever met who loved to laugh as much as I! I will cherish the years of memories, from our initial meeting at Stonewall Jackson School to "The Farm" in the '70's to the most recent, with "Couple #1" (Dan & Carolyn)sharing our wedding day this past April. I'm so glad Cabot got to meet her. She is even more beautiful now that she is free of pain. All of you will remain in my thougths and prayers. Love, Gerri

To all of Carolyn's Family, I went to school with her so being such a small school we all were pretty close to each other & our familes, from 1st grade to graduation. It is so hard to believe she has passed on, but knowing there is no pain now must give all of us comfort. She was a beautiful and happy person and I am so glad that you and Carolyn attended the last class reunion, she told me that she just had to come home and visit all her ole friends. We all truly do love each other and have made a bond that has lasted a lifetime. Hold close all those special memories, I will.

To Dan and Family,
I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. Carolyn fought a good fight and we would not wish her back with all the pain, dr. visits and medicine. I remember her good and bad days. You can feel blessed for the good ones and learn from the bad ones. Trust God for renewed strength in the coming days. Rejoice that Carolyn has found her reward. It is what she worked toward. She always hoped for the best for her children and loved the grandchildren. I enjoyed her friendship. God's blessings to all.

Oh Danny, I was so sorry to hear about Carolyn's illness and recent passing. This has to be a very sad time for you. I will always remember our good times together when I was married to Danny Reynolds, living in Danville, and teaching with you at O.T. Bonner. Carolyn was a beautiful woman, physically and in spirit. I did not realize that you were living in Roanoke. The last I heard you were at Smith Mountain Lake, and I had hoped that one day I would get up that way to visit both of you. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and all the children.
