Harvey's Knob Hawkwatch

October 14, 2008

Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert have been true friends to the hawkwatch and people we look forward to seeing each Fall. They are part of our family. I recall that he was in the cavalry during WW2, but wouldn't provide details - characteristic of the great generation. We had a standing joke: One year during mid-September he had to walk down the trail, as we call it. While he was "walking", a great bunch of Broadwings came over the knob to everyone's delight. I credited his journey down the path with the great flight of hawks and each time he would come to the mountain, he would ask me if he should go down the path. Mr. Gilbert seemed to be a quiet, humble man who loved his family and his country. We will miss him very much and trust Mrs. Gilbert will visit us on the mountain.
