Nathan Garthright Holmes

Mr. Nathan Garthright Holmes, 92, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2008. As a dedicated family man, Army veteran and faithful member and trustee of Shaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, he touched people of all ages with his compassion and practical wisdom. Most of his life was devoted to helping others. He wanted to be remembered as a "devout Christain". He was blessed with children, Rita Holmes Irvin and Glen (Michele) Holmes; grandchildren, Davina Irvin and Jonathan Holmes; and greatgrandchildren, Kyanna and Desiree Holmes. Many other dear family members and friends remain to rejoice in his memory. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Verna Thomas Holmes; his sister-inlaw, Mrs. Rosa Thomas Holmes; and his grandson, Christopher A. Holmes. He was the sole survivor of six children born to Nathan Mataw Holmes and Flora McDaniel Holmes. Funeral services will be held at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, 580 High Street, Christiansburg, Va. 24073 at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2008. The family will greet friends and relatives as well as receive expressions of sympathy on the same day at the church beginning at noon. Donations to Schaeffer Cemetery Society, P.O. Box 584, Christiansburg, Va. 24068 are requested in lieu of flowers. Final Rites are entrusted to Penn's Funeral Home, 248 Randolph Avenue, in Pulaski, Va., 540-980-1226.
