John Oliver Obituary
John Thomas Oliver, 84, of 1033 College Drive, Martinsville, Va., died on Monday, October 13, 2008, at his home. Born on October 19, 1923, in Welch, W.Va., he was a son of the late Rufus Oliver and Nora Grindstaff Oliver Bowles. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Phillip Neil "Buck" Oliver; a sister, Zella Holt; and a brother, Vance Oliver. Mr. Oliver was a machine operator for Continental Container, now Stone Container, for 37 years. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church and served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Virginia Beck Oliver, of the home; two daughters, Dana Marie Oliver, of Salem, Va., and Frances Sue Moose Boynton, of Lynchburg, Va.; two sons, Thomas Wayne Oliver and his wife, Mary Lynn Oliver, of Brentwood, Tenn., and David William Moose, of Bedford, Va.; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Huie, of Collinsville, Va.; two sisters, Wilma Moore, of Atlanta, Ga., and Judy Kilpatrick, of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Billy Oliver, of Rocky Mount, Va., and Kelvin Bowles, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; one stepbrother, Pete Bowles, of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren, Jason Oliver, Mathew Oliver, Bryce Oliver, Brynn Oliver, Mary Taylor Oliver, John Wayne Oliver and Pamela Oliver Wright; and four great-grandchildren, Madison Wright, Ian Wright, Natalie Oliver and Jenna Oliver.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Reverend Haywood Alcorn and the Reverend Ron Gardner officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, October 15, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home.
