Walter Strautin Obituary

Mr. Walter Strautin, 87, of Harrisonburg, Va., passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at his home. Before moving to Harrisonburg, he had lived in Roanoke, Va., for the last 47 years. Mr. Strautin was born in Riga, Latvia on July 21, 1921, and was the son of the late Adolph and Anna Strautin. He retired from Mechanical Development in Roanoke, where he was a tool and die designer. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, and most recently a member of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Harrisonburg. He served in the United States Army in World War II. He enjoyed playing soccer, ice hockey and ice skating. He was a member of the Roanoke Cottillion Club. He was united in marriage on November 24, 1990, to Lee Roupas Strautin, who survives him. He is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Mary Perkins Strautin, of Austin, Texas; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews, Jed and Kristi Angel Pascarella, Nick, Leigh, James and Thomas, of Harrisonburg, Va., Harry and Kelly Angel, Kalli, Emily and Bill, of Northbrook, Ill., Thomas Jr. and Shelly Roupas, Thomas, III and David, of Burlington, N.C., Nicki Roupas Remley, Michael and Shannon, of Charlotte, N.C., and Bobby and Eva Roupas Melotti, of Virginia Beach, Va. Walter doted on his grandnieces and grand-nephews, and considered them his grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Dottie Haywood Roupas, of Burlington, N.C., and Bertha Roupas Rosson, of Salem, Va.; and several nieces and nephews in Latvia. Mr. Strautin was also preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa Edwards Strautin, of Crewe, Va.; two brothersin-law, Gen. William Rosson and Thomas Roupas, of Roanoke; and two sisters, Lilija Stankus Grietena and Vera Stankus Niedre, of Riga, Latvia. The Rev. Geoffrey Gwynne and Father Dean Nastos will preside over the service, which will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 9:30 a.m. on Friday until service time at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Episcopal Church Building Fund, 901 Parkwood Dr., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 30 Huntington Blvd., Roanoke, Va. 24012.
