Mary Hess Obituary

Mary Katherine Russell (Kat) Hess, 89, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 24, 2008. She was preceded by her husband, Nelson; oldest son, Richard; granddaughter, Krista Holman; and brothers, Pat and Charlie. She was born on November 29, 1918, in Marion, Va., to the late Charles Loomis Russell, a stonemason, and Margaret Ryan Russell Jackson, a traveling nurse. Kat, as she was affectionately known to her family, grew up in the Abbott Community of Craig County with her beloved adoptive mother, the late Mary Susanah "Aunt Meddie" Lee. Kat leaves behind to cherish her memory her oldest son's widow, Shirley Hess; son, Michael Hess and wife, Heather; her daughter, Margaret Holman and husband, Bruce Holman; youngest son, David Hess and wife, Jane-ellen; special nephew, Elvin Lee and his wife, Helen; grandchildren, Sabrina Thompson and husband, Keith, Rhonda Scott and husband, Ben, Steve Hess and wife, Audrey, Robin Watson and husband, Gary, Dawn Holman and husband, Alek Sokolovsky, Ryan Cash, Kobi Lloyd and husband, Rob, Flanders Koerner and husband, Scott; eight greatgrandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mae R. Russell and Lucille H. Slayton; brothers-in-law, Winfred Hess and wife, Arlene, and Clifford Hess; and numerous nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends. Mary was truly genuine in her everyday actions with family and friends, always giving of herself and expecting nothing in return. She would be truly pleased if in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be made to the Craig County Public Library in her name. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2008, in the Richfield Nursing Home, the Jane Morgan Harris Chapel with Chaplin Tom Clay officiating. Inurnment will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2008, at Lee Cemetery in Craig County. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory, 540-366-0707.

I first met Mrs. Hess as a young teenager, or maybe even younger, I just don’t remember. We all attended Calvary Baptist Church and then Bruce married Margaret when I was around 15. For 45 or so years I have known this wonderful lady and in all those years certain things about her remained constant – her sweet smile, her strong Christian faith, which I appreciated even more as I got older, her kindness, and her loving nature. I was her son-in-law’s sister, but she treated me as more than that and always made me feel a part of her family. I enjoyed going out to eat with all of them, especially Harbor Inn, having dessert with them, being in Disney World with them when Dawn got married, and so many other wonderful memories. Mrs. Hess isn’t suffering any longer and I’m sure she has that sweet, sweet smile for all those in Heaven with her. Those of us left on earth will miss her terribly, particularly Margaret & Bruce, David & Jane Ellen and Mike, but we all know she is rejoicing in Heaven and one of these days we will be with her again. My sincere condolences go out to the family. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all in the coming weeks and months. Love, Barbara Jean

Mrs. Hess,

I've always remembered how kind you were to my brother, sister, and me when we were children. You taught Sunday School at Calvary Baptist and you always had such a sweet welcoming smile. Years later when I visited my Aunt Gladys at Richfield you had that same sweet smile.

I have taught Sunday School myself over the years and many times I've wanted to quit. But I always see your face in the back of my mind and decide to keep going.

I know God was using you then just as he used you throughout your life.
And I believe that as you passed over into the presence of the Lord you were greeted with a sweet smile and "Well done good and faithful servant"

You will be missed!

Jennifer

Although I knew Mrs. Hess for just a short time she quickly became my "Granny". She was such an inspiration to me and I will always treasure the moments I sat beside her bed and listened to her Godly wisdom. She truly displayed the attributes of a Proverbs 31 woman in all that she said and did. She told me not long before she left this earth that if she is suffering here on earth with Him she knows that she will soon reign with Him, and I know that is just what she is doing now!
