George Greene Obituary

George H. Greene, Sr., 84, of Roanoke, died Friday, October 24, 2008. He was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church in Roanoke, served as Sunday School Teacher at various other churches over the years, was a World War II Army Veteran, member of the VFW Post 4522 in Vinton, member of the Kiwanis Club of Lee County, Florida, member of the Gideons, East Camp of Lee County, Florida, lifetime member of the Civitan Club of Roanoke since 1977 where he received the Distinguished Honor President in 2000 and 2001, and was honored for "Most New Members", and a Foundation Fellow of the Recognizing foundation for the Civitan Shropshire Program. George worked for Westinghouse for 40 years where he was twice honored in the White Westinghouse Hall of Fame and was awarded the White Westinghouse Leadership Award for his 40 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister, and is survived by his wife, Kathleen "Kay" M. Greene; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Michael McClellan of New Orleans, Louisiana, Andrea and Shawn Bumbalough of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, George H., Jr. and Deborah R. Greene of Brunswick, Ohio; grandchildren, Lauren Greene, George H. Greene, III, Allison Greene, Sarah Greene; sister, Agnes G. Mathis of Ronda, North Carolina; and one brother, Graham C. Greene of Elkin, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Oakey's East Chapel with Dr. Robert G. Moore, III and Woody Turner officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Ronda, NC with Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bonsack Baptist Church Food Bank, 4845 Cloverdale Rd., Roanoke, Va., 24019, the Civitan Club of Roanoke, P.O. Box 14211, Roanoke, Va., 24038-4211, Carilion Hospice, 1615 Franklin Rd. SW, Roanoke, Va., 24016, or the VFW Post 4522, 117 Lee Ave., Vinton, Va., 24179.
