Floyd Porter Obituary

Floyd Burks (Buck) Porter, 77, of Bedford, Va., died on Monday, November 17, 2008, in Catawba State Hospital. He was born on January 18, 1931, in Bedford County, a son of the late Clarence Landis Porter and Mary Dooley Porter. Buck was a member of Bedford Church of God and a retired employee of the City of Bedford with 32 years of service. Following retirement, Buck continued his hobby of buying and selling car parts. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also loved to hunt but his passion was being outdoors working with his hands. In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by two brothers, E. Lewis Porter and Bennie Porter; and a sister, Annie Mae St.Clair. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma Coleman Porter; a daughter, Debrah Ayers and her husband, Kenneth, of Bedford; a son, Cleve Porter and his wife, Sandy, of Milton, Fla.; a brother, Joe Porter and wife, Joyce, of Bedford; three sisters, Margaret Overstreet and husband, Jessie, of Bedford, Donna Warden and friend, Steve, of Roanoke, and Brenda Hill and husband, Mike, of Bedford; five grandchildren, Cristy Wood and friend, Tim Peak, Jason Wood and wife, Patty, Morgan Porter and fiancée, Ashley, Aaron Porter and fiancée, Susan, and Katie Porter and friend, Mark; three great-grandchildren, Justin, Justina and Jace Wood; three stepgrandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson. A celebration of Buck's life will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, in the Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rick Dellinger and Pastor Ray T. Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, Va., 540-586-3443.
