Jesse Woodward Obituary

Rev. Jesse T. Woodward, 87, of Bartlett, Tenn., and formerly of Blacksburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at Signature Healthcare Memphis. Rev. Woodward was ordained on December 25, 1939, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and went on to pastor in Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, West Virginia, and finally Blacksburg, Va., at Slussers Chapel Church of God. While pastor at Memphis 1st Church of God, he married Frances Bryan Woodward on February 8, 1943. He also graduated from Anderson College, now Anderson University, in June of 1956. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2008, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2008, both at Memphis Funeral Home Germantown Parkway Chapel. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville, Tenn. Rev. Woodward was preceded in death by his mother, Allene Baker; and sister, Geneva Blevins. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Bryan Woodward; and niece, Loretta (Bobby) Rutherford, of Tifton, Ga. Memorials may be sent to Anderson University, 1100 E. 5th Street, Anderson, Ind. 46012. Arrangements by Memphis Funeral Home, Germantown Parkway Chapel, Memphis, Tenn., 901.725.0100.

Frances, I remember you and Jesse when I worked at the Christian Brotherhood Hour and you, Frances, worked for Church Service. This was in the 1950's. I remember always thinking you and Jesse were a neat couple. Sorry to learn of Jesse's passing. Our prayers are with you. I was Jan Schrader at that time.
