Ronald Lyle Obituary

On Tuesday, December 9, 2008, Ronald Glenn Lyle, of Hardy, Va., passed away at his home after a lengthy illness. Born on November 1, 1937, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of Oscar and Erma Young Lyle. Mr. Lyle grew up in Silver Spring, Md., graduating from Montgomery Blair High School in 1956, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1960. Mr. Lyle worked at the Washington Star Newspaper Company, starting as an apprentice stereotyper in 1956 and rising to the position of Night Production Manager until the paper closed in 1981. He then worked in auto sales in the metropolitan Washington area and later in the retail paint business before moving back to Roanoke in 1994, where he became an independent painting contractor until ill health forced his recent retirement. Mr. Lyle is survived by his wife, Vicki Washburn Lyle, of Hardy, Va.; two sons, David Patrick Lyle and wife, Cathy, of Salem, Va., and Robert Brian Lyle and special friend, Dede Dorathy, of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Edna Lyle Sidell and her husband, John, of Winchester, Va., and Barbara Lyle Loomis and husband, Greg, of LaFargeville, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Chelsea, Drew, and Rachel Lyle; five nieces and nephews; stepson, Jeff Washburn and his wife, Nicole; two stepgrandchildren, Luke and Ellie Washburn, of Arden, N.C.; mother-in-law, Selma Bottomley Anderson, of Galax; and special cousin and close friend, Donald Clower, of Bowie, Md. He is also survived by Sandra Groseclose Lyle, the mother of his two sons; and his faithful companion, Brandi, his chocolate lab. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for the loving, expert, and supportive care of Dr. Bonnie Culkin and the Good Samaritan Hospice Staff. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Barbre officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke or the American Heart Association. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem, Va.
