John Manner Obituary

John Morrison (Jack) Manner Jr., 83, of 1412 Hamilton Avenue, Clifton Forge, Va., died on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at Brian Center Nursing Center in Low Moor. He was born in Clifton Forge on June 6, 1925, the son of the late John Morrison Manner and Lela Weeder Manner. He was a retired Engineer with CSX Transportation in Clifton Forge. He attended Virginia Tech was a graduate of the University of Miami. He was a former Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #2 and was an Eagle Scout. Jack served on the Clifton Forge Public Library Board, was an active member of the C & O Historical Society, the Cowpasture River Preservation Association, and was sight chairman of the Clifton Forge Lions Club. He served in the United States Marine Corp in the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II and the Korean War. He was a Clifton Forge/Covington representative of the Virginia Tech Hokie Club, and member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He had a great love of his family, friends, Virginia Tech, and the Cowpasture River. He is survived by his wife, Jean Ann Higgins Manner; a daughter, Martha Ann Manner-Brown and husband, Dennis, of Fredericksburg; a son, John Morrison Manner III and wife, Meryl, of Oak Hill, Va.; three granddaughters, Catherine Ann Manner, Elizabeth Morrison Manner, and Anne Marie Manner; and a number of friends and family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008, from St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clifton Forge with the Reverend Louis Benoit as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be conducted 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at Nicely Funeral Home followed by visitation until 7 p.m. Friends may call anytime at Nicely Funeral Home or at the residence of 1412 Hamilton Ave. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 620 Jefferson Ave., Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to the C & O Historical Society, 312 East Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.
