Vernie Russell Obituary

God has called Vernie Shrader Hayes Russell, 91, of the Wolf Creek community of Narrows, Va., to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 11, 2008. Born February 25, 1917, at Niday, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Gratton and Louisa Leftwich Shrader. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Hubert B. Russell; three brothers, Douglas, Everett and Troy Shrader. Vernie was retired from the Celanese Corporation in Narrows with 36 years of service. Vernie loved the Lord and was a loyal and faithful member of Round Bottom United Methodist Church. She loved to sew, spending many hours making quilts and clothing for her children and grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dick and Mary Hayes, of Heath, Ohio, and Joe and Dorothy Hayes, of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Lisa Hayes, of Chicago, Ill., Ricky Hayes, of Houston, Texas, Angie Ryan and husband, Andy, of Newark, Ohio, Anita Copperide, of Newark, Ohio, Randy Hayes and wife, Sonia, Melinda Hayes, and Julie Griffith and husband, John, all of Roanoke; five greatgrandchildren, Tyler Wells, Will Caldwell, Max Hayes, Sarah Hayes and Tessa Griffith; and a sister, Janie Body, of Roanoke. The family would like to express thanks to the staff at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek for her excellent care the last 27 months. The family would like to give special thanks to Leliah Pruett and Betty Pillow, two of Vernie's lifelong friends, for their kindness and friendship. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008, in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrader Cemetery at Niday, in the Wolf Creek Community in Bland County. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service on Sunday, December 14, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider Round Bottom United Methodist Church. We were saddened to hear that Joe's mother had passed away. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers, and may you find comfort in the memories that you have. I know that heaven is a better place with her presence.
