Frederick Bromm Obituary

Frederick Thornton Bromm, 88, passed away at his home in Roanoke, Va., on December 13, 2008. He was born and raised in Evansville, Ind., the son of Frederick Charles and Ruth Whittemore Bromm. He enlisted in the United States Army infantry and served in the European theater in World War II. He graduated from Washington and Lee University and entered a career in banking he began with Chemical Bank in New York City. He relocated to Roanoke to work for the First National Exchange Bank where he worked for 22 years becoming senior vice president. He then worked as senior vice president of the Bank of North Carolina before returning to Roanoke to become president of United Virginia Bank of Roanoke, now part of SunTrust Bank, for 10 years. He served on several area boards of directors including the Roanoke Symphony, The Salvation Army of the Roanoke Valley, Society for Crippled Children of Southwestern Virginia, Roanoke Country Club, Virginia Inland Sailing Association and corporate boards. He was also president of the VirginiasCarolinas chapter of Robert Morris Associates, commercial bankers. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church since 1950. He was an avid sportsman and greatly enjoyed tennis, golf, sailing and boating. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne Cassell Bromm, originally from Charlottesville; and by three children, Elizabeth Cassell Bromm Moore, Frederick Whittemore Bromm and David Hildreth Bromm, all of Roanoke. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Dalton, of Cincinnati; a nephew, Dirk Allen, of Cincinnati; a nephew, Eugene Hildreth Cassell Jr. and family, of Winston Salem; and a niece, Mary Cassell Jones and family, of Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army of Roanoke Valley or to the League of Older Americans Meals on Wheels program. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at St. John's Episcopal Church, corner of Jefferson St. and Elm Ave. Interment will be private. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.
