Eva DeWitt Obituary

Eva Mae Wade DeWitt, of Roanoke, Va., died peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2009, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon R. Wade and Anna Mae Baucom Wade. Surviving to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 62 years, Louis C. DeWitt; daughter, Rebecca Smith and husband, Larry, of Pittsboro, N.C.; daughter, Bonnie Craig, of Roanoke; daughter, Judy Nye and husband, William, of Floyd, Va.; and son, Marshall DeWitt and wife, Gloria, of Snellville, Ga. Eva was a dear and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and is additionally survived by eight grandchildren, Karen Smith, Stephen Smith, Lara Deiboldt, Kevin Craig, Will Robertson, Anna Robertson, Heather Pelham and Matthew DeWitt; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, E. Riley Wade, of Roanoke; and by her sister-in-law, Virginia D. Altice, of Vallejo, Calif. Eva will be greatly missed by her entire family and by her beloved golden retriever, Lucky. Eva graduated from William Fleming High School and was employed for many years in the offices of Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation. She was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church and an active member of Louis's IBEW Retirement Club. The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the staff of Gentle Shepherd hospice, especially to Elaine Wilson, RN CHPN, for the excellent care given to Eva and the compassion shown to Eva and the entire family. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel on Sunday, January 18, 2009. Interment will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2009, at Sherwood Memorial Park and will be followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Tom Mustard officiating. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
