Mary Christine Arnold Austin

1912 - 2009

Mary Christine Arnold Austin, 96, of Roanoke, Va., died Sunday morning, January 25, 2009. She was Adam and Nina Arnold's Christmas present in 1912. She had retired from the Veteran's Administration as Assistant Chief Financial Director after 30 years. Chris was a lifetime member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. Christine led a vibrant life. She enjoyed travel, golf, bowling, bridge and gardening. Aunt Christine will be remembered by her family as a loving and caring mentor. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Joseph E. Austin; brothers, James and Phillip Arnold; sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Ambrose Wood and Marjorie and Dick McMahon. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Ann Wood Mays, Pat Weaver, Betty and Warren Bischof, Pete and Freda Wood, Jim Wood, Joe Wood, Mike and Jackie Wood, Susan and David Jett, Elizabeth and Bill Belton, Mary and K.J. Renteria and Patrick and Linda McMahon; as well as many great-nieces and nephews and many loving neighbors and mostly dead friends. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at St. Andrews Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 4 and 6 8 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2009, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
