Lynda Piver Obituary

Lynda Rogers Piver, 67, of Narrows, Va., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at her home after a graceful and dignified battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. Lynda was born in Augusta, Ga., on October 4, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Dewitt Clifton and Ruth McMekin Rogers.
She graduated from Dublin High School in Dublin, Ga., and attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, N.C. A lifetime Presbyterian, Lynda served as an elder in First Presbyterian Church of Narrows. Lynda was always active in volunteer work, serving as Chaplain and Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Junior Service League of Orangeburg, S.C. She was an emergency medical technician with the Edisto Beach, S.C., Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a member and officer in the Edisto Island Flotilla, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Lynda was long active in Scottish heritage organizations, among them, Scottish Foundation of the Virginia Highlands, Clan Donald U.S.A., Clan Graham Society, Coastal Scottish Heritage Society and Savannah Scottish Games Committee, Savannah, Ga., often serving an officer in these organizations. She was also a member of George Pearis Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Chaplain and before her illness, one year as Regent.
She is survived by her husband, Forrest Lee Piver, of Narrows; five daughters and one stepdaughter and their families, Teresa Graham Stark and son-in-law, James Keith Stark, grandchildren, Sarah Morgan Stark and James Keith (Chip) Stark Jr., of Wilmington, N.C.; Lisa Graham Pinckney and son-in-law, Charles Andrew Pinckney, grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Byrd and Andrew Dewitt Pinckney, of Rock Hill, S.C.; Virginia Graham Wilkins and son-in-law Adam Wilkins, grandchildren, Olivia Marie Wilkins and Robert Harrison Wilkins, of Savannah, Ga.; Christine Graham Kzzinsky, of Savannah, Ga., Laurian Graham Zimmerman, grandson, Edward Alexander Zimmerman, of Tega Cay, S.C., stepdaughter, Harper Piver Lurie and stepson-in-law, Robert Lurie, of Tempe, Ariz. She will also be missed by her beloved West Highland Terrier, Thistle; and a "grand dog," Bonnie.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Narrows with the Rev. Shirley Larson officiating. The family will receive visitors at the Piver home, "Iona's Grace," 340 Main Street in Narrows immediately following the service. Interment will be at Wesleyan Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, at Scotts Hill in Wilmington, N.C., at a later date. At Lynda's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Narrows, Va., the Clan Donald Foundation, or Susan G. Komen for the Cure for breast cancer research. Riffe's Funeral Service is assisting the Piver family. Online condolence messages to the family can be sent to www.riffes.com.

Mr. Piver,
I was so saddened to hear of the loss of a very dear friend. I was told that she was doing well. We were suppose to have e-mailed each other after she got the dreadful news about cancer and I guess she never got around to it....she had many other things for her to be concerned about I truly understand.
But the main reason I wanted to write this to you it to let you know (as well as you already know) that you had one of the most sweetiest
and dear women in your life that ever
walked on the face of this earth. I say this because for the short time that I knew her I felt that I had known her for a lifetime. We shared stories and receipes and I felt as if I was one of her closiest friends. I loved how she called you Forrest Lee
and when she did she just glowed... you were her knight in shining armour! I will miss her but I am glad I got to know her! My prayers are with you for it will be hard and if you need a ear just come by and see me and I will be happy to reminise with you.

Dear Forrest and family
Lynda will be sorely missed by her DAR friends. She was a leader in her chapter and so very highly regarded and loved by her DAR sisters. She was a friend to Southwest Virginia through her actions. Our hearts go out to you and your family at this time; we are very sorry to lose her in this life. May God bless your family as you lean on his promises.

I have fond memories of parties at Lynda's "castle" in Savannah. She made the very best Scottish trifle and was a dear friend.
