Anne Showalter Obituary

Anne Carmel Showalter, 101, died on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the Wheatland Hills Retirement Center in Radford where she had resided for a number of years. She was born on August 3, 1907, to the late Edward Thomas and Alice May (Mackie) Cummins Showalter of Snowville. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Julian, Wendall and Cyril; and six sisters, Ruby Stafford, Kathryn Yager, Elizabeth Walker, Beulah Gowin, Winifred Shelburne, and Lenore Showalter. Surviving are one sister, Eugenia Farris, of Newbern; a sister-in-law, Gae Showalter; a brother-in-law, Cloyd Shelburne; and several nieces and nephews. Carmel was a member of the Radford Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Radford College and taught school in Pulaski County. She was retired from the State Department Agency for International Development in Washington, D.C., where she lived for many years. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2009, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Mr. Larry Phillips and Mr. John Croft officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. I did not know Carmel personally, but I always felt like I did. When I became a member of the Radford Church of christ, her name was always brought up for prayer. I thought if she was anything like her sister Jean, she was a very great womem. She is in God's wonderful arm's now.
