WHEN I WAS THIRTEEN YEARS OLD, 1967, THE ROANOKE TIMES WOULD DROP OFF MY BUNDLE OF NEWSPAPERS AT HARLEY'S GAS STATION. I WOULD PACK THEM IN MY NEWSPAPER BAG , AND OR THE 4 BASKETS ON MY BIKE,BUY A $.05 BOTTLE OF POP FROM THE MACHINE IN FRONT OF HIS STATION, WALK UP TO MICHEAL'S BAKERY AND GET A FREE PIE.THEN MY JOURNEY TO DELIVER 168 NEWSPAPERS BEGAN.IT ALL STARTED AT 5 A.M. EVERY MORNING. NOW THOSE WERE THE DAYS. MR. BOWER ALWAYS PATCHED MY BICYCLE TIRES WHEN I HAD A BLOW OUT. HE WAS A VERY NICE MAN. I REMEMBER HIM VERY WELL. I WENT TO SCHOLL WITH HIS NIECE, KATHY
