Willie Battle Obituary

Willie Lee Dow Battle, oldest resident of Elliston, Va., passed away on Monday, February 2, 2009, at 99 years of age. Willie was born on December 2, 1909, to Andrew Lee Dow and Mary Helen Sherman and raised in Elliston, Va. She left school after fourth grade to help raise her brothers and sisters. Besides working in the fields, her first job was working for Miss Lucy Helm for $3.00 a week. In 1927, she spent a year in Connellsville, Pa., working for $18.00 a week in a resort.

In ways big and small, your loved one's life changed our world and left it a better place, and touched too many hearts to ever be forgotten. May you find comfort in knowing how many people share your sadness.
"In the seeds of this life, we find hope for a better life to come… May it comfort you to know that your loved one is now at peace.

I know of Mrs. Battle through my sister, Sandra Smith, and my mother, the late Thelma Taylor Fant, and I just marvel at her life. What a wonderful woman she was and I know that you will miss her, but what a blessing it was to have had her for such a long time.

I don't know where to begin. My Grandma was like a mother to me. She taught me how to do everything from blowin my nose to how to go out and get a job. She would always say "you get up early in the morning and go by yourself". She taught me that hard work and determination will always prevail in the end. She taught me that family is the key to happiness and longevity, and success. She use to always tell us to honor your mother and father, that your days may be long. Although she did not a church goin woman, she had her reasons, I feel that I learn the most about God from her. She always guided us in the right path and she always taught us to treat people right. I thank God for her being the most important factor and presence in my life, and above all, I thank God for allowing her to be with us for a long as He did. I Bless God for not allow her to suffer long, and I look forward to the day that I will see her beautiful face and hear her laughter once again. Grandma I love you with all my heart and I will miss you so much. Until we meet again.

Mrs. Battle was a wonderful and caring person. My mother, Thelma Taylor Fant, a friend of Mrs. Battle since childhood, was born in Elliston and reared in Connellsville, Pa. They kept in touch until my mother's death in 2003. Some family members still reside in the Elliston area (Simmons, Turner, Brewer, Coles, and Craggette). Since my mother's death, I have kept in touch with Mrs. Battle and will miss her terribly. We enjoyed talking and reminiscing about her visits to Connellsville during her youth.

I know that Mrs. Battle and my mother are happy being together again and will be watching over their children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

I am truly going to miss her. She was like everyone's favorite Aunt. She lived only two doors up from me and sometimes I would go and play Kings in the Korner with her. As a child and even into adult I remember hearing her and Mrs. Goldie talking across the street to each other. Even after I moved away, I would often stand on my mom's porch and listen to the two of them talking to each other. I was a great welcome home. She was a wonderful lady and would do anything she can for you. You certainly could count on the children being safe as they played in the road because she kept and eye on all of us. I loved her so much and I will miss her even more. Rest well in God's hands Ms. Willie because you were already an Angel while you lived here on earth. My prayers are with the family and you know Ms. Willie would want you to keep on going. The family would know me as Teresa Twine but now I am McNease and my husband is Earl. We live near DC and can't get in to Elliston or anywhere else as we would like too. Just know that I and all of Elliston will miss Ms. Willie Battle.
