Marion Wilson Obituary

Born on March 15,1933, in Mullens, W.Va., Marion Elizabeth Griffin Wilson, died on January 30, 2009, in Roanoke, Va., due to complications of emphysema. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion Edward and Lila Gray Griffin. Marion is survived by her twin sister and "womb-mate" Greta Griffin Jones. She leaves behind sons, Gregory (Vicki), Mike (Lisa), and Billy (Janet) Wilson; and daughters, Lisa Chandrasuwan (Kid), Margaret Deputy Adcock, Eva Graham Oliver and Robin (Mark) McCullough. She had 17 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Marion graduated from Mullens High School in 1951. She was an accomplished classical pianist and studied Pre-Nursing and Physical Education at Radford University. Her first job was as a dance instructor at Floyd Ward School of Dance. Marion was a champion of the underprivileged and worked and trained others towards improving their lives. She was one of the driving forces behind the development of the "Head Start" program in Roanoke, which she worked with for many years. Marion volunteered to go into local jails and prisons to speak to inmates about the journey of recovery. She was active in the Civil Rights movement and in support of that participated in the "March on the Capital" in 1967. Marion worked tirelessly for and with mental health programs in Roanoke and was also employed at one time at Catawba State Hospital. In her later years she worked as a caretaker of the elderly and a nanny for small children. She often said , "I was born to do this" and indeed she was. Marion will be remembered for her wonderful wry sense of humor, her encyclopedic knowledge, her vast intellectual curiosity, her great love of books and poetry and above all, her deep love for her children, grandchildren and twin sister. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Planned Pethood, Angels of Assisi or Manna Food Ministries. Marion fought for equal rights for all people, especially those that did not have a voice. She leaves you all with " A tear and a smile." In the Springtime, her family will scatter her ashes along the banks of the James River in Nelson County near her grandparents farm "Forkfield Farm" at her requests. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.

My Aunt Marion had a big heart and her life touched so many. Through her we saw that life was more than just plodding along, in our own little worlds. We learned to look for and tend to those less fortunate and to fiercely protect those we love. And she showed us to enjoy life, to listen for the music, to laugh, and to dance.
To my mother and cousins, I can not imagine your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am copying and pasting my mother's guestbook entries from her first obituary that ran 1 week ago to the guestbook of her expanded obituary that ran today.

My dear mother's physical presence has left this earth. Mom was the feistiest teeny little ole lady that I have ever encountered in my life. If you ever met my mother, you will never forget her. Please joins us Sunday in celebration of her life. This will be a gathering to share laughter and good times. I look forward to meeting and re-meeting all the people that loved my mother.

I met the most wonderful, loving crazy lady of my entire life 33 years ago.She had so much love in her heart for her family as well as her friends. You were welcomed always with open arms into her home and to her experiences. Wow , what a legacy she leaves us.She was a complex individual in many ways,at the same time she could relate to anyone whether they be 5 or 50, it didn't matter to her .She was here a hero, to save the world!!!She could be tough as nails,as well as gentle as a lamb. That was Wil-son..That was who she was!! I thank God she came into my life, she made my days brighter and opened up my heart to many things. Her family she adored and in saying that I know you all will miss her .I also know wherever she is she will be having a ball and raising the dickens.I say these things with love in my heart for a truly wonderful woman that I will never forget. She was wonderful and loving to my children and very giving of herself to them.
Robin, Billy, Gregg, Michael and Lisa if there is anything I can do please just let me know. I love you all and pray the memories of your Mom will lessen your grief at this time.

I will miss Marion. She was quite an entertainer, and enjoyed telling about the "deed" as much as doing it ! I've known her since l953 when I was at VA Tech and she was at Radford College with her twin Greta who later became my wife. Marion always called me her "big brother", and I felt that I really was. I loved her. Dave Jones

Wow Mom,
There are no words to express not having you here. You were such a manic little chatterbox those last few days. I know you are running around like a sand piper on that great big ocean , enjoying the sunsets! I love you, Your little Rob-Bob

I became a friend of the Wilson family 34 years ago. I was always at their home, no matter which one, doing our thing, partying with Mike, Lisa and Billy and watching Robin grow up. I remember my friendship with Marion and having long conversations and lots of laughs. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the family who will be missing a Mom who always loved and wanted the best for her family.

Marion Elizabeth was my twin sister and we remained very close all thru the years with long nightly phone calls, letters, and being in each other's hearts. I know she is out of her physical and mental pain and "in a far better place" than here on this sometimes cruel earth, but the plain truth of it is that I will miss her terribly, terribly. The void in my life is far more than I ever imagined it would be. I will still talk to her each evening, because I simply cannot give that up. Marion Eliz, "Little Bit","Tweetie Pie","Sis" ...... I'll miss you the rest of my life, til I join you someday. With all my love, your twin, big sister (by one hour and fifteen minutes !), soulmate, womb-mate, and best friend forever...... Greta....
