Barbara Spencer Obituary

Barbara Moxley (Bobbi) Spencer, 64, of Roanoke, Va., died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 13, 2009. She was born on February 20, 1944, to Dude Moxley and the late Bertha Newberry Moxley in Leesburg, Va. She graduated from Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Va., in 1962 and was crowned Miss Loudoun County in 1961.
Bobbi was a giving person. She would drop everything when a need became apparent. She was the full-time caregiver for her father-in-law for several years and supported her husband at the home and the office, filling the roles of doctor, nurse, chef, driver, etc.

She loved to cook and give parties. She had family and friends all over the country that she kept up with by phone, mail, and visits. Whenever a family member or friend had a problem, large or small, Bobbi was there to help. She didn't wait to be told what to do but jumped in and did whatever she saw that needed to be done.

She was an AVID SUPPORTER of Virginia Tech football. Every room in her house is filled with Virginia Tech memorabilia, and the Christmas tree is decorated in VT ornaments from top to bottom. The flowerbed in their backyard was formed in the shape of a football with marigolds planted to form "VT." Their annual tailgating parties, held before the season started each year, bring together family and friends from several states. In 2007, the Hokie Bird was included on the guest list!

She is survived by her husband, William Henry (Bill) Spencer III; her son, Christopher Todd Spencer and daughter-in-law, Catherine; daughter-in-law, Melissa Spencer; grandsons, William Scott (Scooter) Spencer, II and Zachary Kane Spencer; father, Lester O. (Dude) Moxley Sr.; brother, Lester O. (Dude) Moxley Jr. and sister-in-law, Carolyn; and sister, Susan Moxley. Bobbi is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and LOTS of friends.

She was predeceased by her son, William Scott Spencer; and her mother, Bertha Moxley.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel on Peters Creek Road in Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. Carl Douglas officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, February 19, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

To Bill & Family of that special person, Bobbie.
I am saddened by this dreadfull news of Bobbie's passing. I was out of the country and just now received the messages. Why, oh why do the Good go so soon?

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in Eternity's sun rise.

Thanks, Bobbie, for giving us that 'kiss' of your life.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
