Capitola Baird Obituary

Capitola Thomas (Tommie) Baird, 94, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord and rejoin her beloved husband of 59 years, Gene Baird, on Tuesday, February 24, 2009. Born July 16, 1914, in Durham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ludie E. Thomas. She was a longtime, devoted member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church. Mrs. Baird was also predeceased by her daughter, Sandra Jean Smith; brothers and sisters, J.A., James, Pauline and Annie. A devout Christian, our "Grandma" was a loving and nurturing "Grandma" to all. She not only raised her own children, but lovingly raised multi family generations. "Tommie" will be missed by all who knew her. A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Danny W. and Pearl Dickerson; stepdaughter, Dorothy Jean Young; grandchildren, James H. "Chuck" Ferguson and wife, Rebecca, Scott D. Macfarland II and wife, Karey, Dawn M. Doyle, Thomas Eugene Dickerson, Pauline and Brian Belezany, John Minnie and Stacy O'Dontis, Michael and Patrick Young, and Jennifer Young; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. Those preferring, please, make memorials to Preston Oaks Baptist Church, 102 Preston Ave. N.E., Roanoke, Va. 24012. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Preston Oaks Baptist Church. The Rev. James R. Millsaps will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

Thank you all for sharing momories of my "mom". I know Grandaddy was getting tired of waiting on her! Im sure he asked her what took so long?! and if I know Grandma she told him "Gene I had to take care of these grandchildren"! But they are finally togather forever. Thier lives were truely something that most of us could only dream about and thier love was eternal. Im sure they are enjoying the beauty of heaven together and grandaddy is showing her all the sights! I feel so blessed to have had them as my parents and will look foreward to the day that hopefully they will be there waiting on me! Always their loving daughter, Dawn

Tommie Baird was a very special person. I will always remember what a wonderful job she did in raising several of her grandchildren, most especially my nephew, Chuck. She was a beautiful and gracious woman, and her grandchildren are a testament to her grace and character. God bless you, Tommie.

My husband, Perry Smart worked with Gene Baird. We became close friends with Gene and Tommie. Tommie even cared for my daughter several times while I worked. We really enjoyed their company and visiting. Gene and Perry did a lot of fishing together. Perry was working
for Durham Life at that time. We were transferred to Georgia, then Florida, back to Petersburg, Va. and retired on beautiful Lake Gaston. Both of us love to fish so we had many good retirement years. Perry passed away 5 years ago come March. Perry was 80 then.
I check the Roanoke Times on the internet every week. Tommie was 10 years older than me but we enjoyed each others company.
You have my deepest Sympathy.

Thelma Taylor Smart.
