Marvin Reed Obituary

Marvin Gray Reed, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009. Marvin was born on July 30, 1925.He was preceded in death by his father, Harley E. Reed; his mother, Lilly Myers Reed; his sisters, Dorothy Crismond, Juliette Heinline; and a brother, Douglas Reed. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Lynette Taylor Reed; his sons and daughters-in law, Thomas G. Reed, Donald L. Reed and Diana, Michael T. Reed and Debby; sisters, Patsy R. Baltz, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Francis R. Cannaday, of Christiansburg. Pawpaw was the "Good Old Boy" to his grandchildren, Aaron Reed, of Roanoke, Amber Reed, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Caleb Reed, of Christiansburg, Matthew, Wyatt, Autumm, and Faith Reed, all of Elliston. Also surviving are close friends, Bettie Maxey, Tommy Myers, Harold Akers, Jimmy Blount, and Zeke Epperly. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Marvin was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Orestes in the South Pacific. He served as an active member with the Christiansburg Fire Department for 30 years. He was also a 50 year member of Kazim Shriners, a member of the Montgomery County Game and Fish Club, Christiansburg Hunting Club, and a Masonic Veteran of McDaniel Lodge #86 AM&FM. Mr. Reed worked in furniture manufacturing for 30 years and later retired form the Town of Christiansburg water treatment plant. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Clayton Lake wing of Heritage Hall for the special care they received. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009 at The Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Good and the Rev. Brian Siegel officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made to The Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, 110 Depot Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073, Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24068 or to St Paul United Methodist Church, 220 West Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24074. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.hornefuneralservice.com.
