Maggie Willis Obituary

Maggie Harris Perdue Dunlap Willis, 87, of Moneta, Va., passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Smith Mountain Lake Retirement Village. She was born on Thursday, August 25, 1921, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Harris and Annie Daniel Harris. She was also preceded in death by by her husbands, Henry O. Willis, James E. Dunlap and Charles T. Perdue; brothers, Charlie, John and Raymond Harris; and sisters, Ruby Martrin, Pearl Overstreet and Nadine Snead. Maggie has always been very active in her churches, Diamond Hill and Emmaus, and was always willing to prepare meals for any occasion. After her retirement from Montgomery Ward, she and Jimmy retired to Moneta, to once again be active in her church. After Jimmy passed, she met her childhood friend, Henry O. Willis and they later married. Maggie was a member of Emmaus United Methodist Church and because of Alzheimer's she has not been as active as she would have liked. She was a resident of Carriage Hill, Trinity Mission and most recently of Smith Mountain Lake Retirement Village. Surviving are her three sons, Thomas Ralph Perdue and wife, Rachel, of Moneta, Ernest Clay Perdue of Tampa, Fla., and James Daniel Dunlap and wife, Jeri, of Newport News; a daughter, Brenda P. Meadows and husband, Terry, of Parrish, Fla.; a brother, Earl Harris of Vinton; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. The family requests that those wishing to make memorials to consider the Carilion Hospice of Bedford, P.O. Box 688, Bedford, Va. 24523, the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 823, Lynchburg, Va. 24505 or Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Diamond Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Greer, the Rev. Ken Butterworth and the Rev. Bobby Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, March 6, 2009, after noon and the family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford, Va.

Maggie has made a difference and touched the lives of so many in her life time. I am a better person for having met her and her wonderful family. I'm thankful for fond memories of Maggie, that warm smile, her singing, and "baby." May God continue to bless you Ralph, Rachel and family.
