Irene Bonds Dean, of Roanoke, Va., fell asleep in death on Saturday, March 7, 2009. She was born August 20, 1922, in Bedford County, Va., to the late Giles H. and Angie S. Bonds. Her early education was received from Bedford County Schools and she later completed at Roanoke City Public Schools. She enjoyed the activities of the church, especially Wednesday night prayer services. Irene's employment was domestic, caring for private families and enjoyed working for local caterers serving private parties. Her favorite things to do were traveling, visiting family members and attending her family reunions. Irene was well known as a historian for her knowledge of her family and other families in the Bedford County area. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Dean Sr.; and two brothers, Dalton Bonds and Elbert Bonds. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, James W. Dean Jr. (Bernice), of Richmond; grandson, James C. Dean (Fatima), of Raleigh, N.C.; granddaughters, Charlotte W. Dean, of Richmond, and Regina G. Earp, of Raleigh, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Breelyn C. Dean; great-grandson, Garrison J. Dean, both of Raleigh, N.C.; other loved ones are devoted nieces, Diane Jones (James), of Galesburg, Ill., and Cheryl Cooper (Jerry) and Janice White, both of Richmond; and nephews, Eddie Bonds (Gloria) and Garrett Bonds, both of Goodview. She also leaves four great-nieces; four great-nephews; a host of other relatives and many friends, especially Mrs. Bertha Mitchell; and a caring neighbor, Mrs. Sue Campbell. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Loudon Avenue Christian Church with the Rev. William L. Lee officiating. The interment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. I am deeply saddened by the passing of your mother. I have very fond memories of your family. Your mother, father and you were the nicest people, always having kind words and beautiful smiles. Whenever we visited my mother on Massachusetts Avenue, I would have enjoyable visits with your mother. I grew up on Orange Avenue, and graduated from Addison High School in 1956.
You and your family have my deepest sympathy. Sincerely

You have my prayers during your time of sorrow. Mrs. Dean was such a wonderful Christian lady and will be missed. She quietly served as a menter to many younger women of the church.
