Doris Selkirk Obituary

Doris Cadd Selkirk, 69, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, March 8, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie W. and Annie D. Cadd; husband, Bobby N. Selkirk; and sisters, Burnell C. Logan, Betty C. Brizendine and Margaret Ann Cadd. Doris' work career began in the Roanoke City Manager's office. Following the time she spent in the City Manager's office, she worked for many years as secretary and organist at Glad Tidings Assembly of God, now Life Church. In 1997 she began a new ministry as office manager and the first employee hired at Simpson Funeral Home. The time spent at the funeral home continued a life of kindness and compassion. She was always willing to comfort a hurting soul, and to offer her life as testimony that families that had experienced a loss could and would find a way to survive. Surviving are her loving and devoted sons, Mark R. Selkirk and wife, Claudette, of Vinton, and Todd S. Selkirk and wife, Laura, of Botetourt County; grandson, who was the light and joy of her life, Tanner C. Selkirk; brother, Harold T. Cadd, of Lubbock, Texas; sisters, Carolyn Wooldridge and husband, Jody, of Dallas, Texas, and Peggy Daniels and husband, Danny, of Wanchese, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to East Appalachian Teen Challenge, P.O. Box 19385, Roanoke, Va. 24019. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Life Church, 7422 Deer Branch Road by Pastor Joe Copolo and Pastor Troy Webb. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, 540-366-0707.

Dear Mark and family,
I am saddened at your loss. Mothers are very special people and their passing is always painful. But in reading about your mother and her devotion to the Lord, you know she is rejoicing with the angels and looking into His Smiling Face. May you and your family find the comfort that only the Lord can give.

Mark, Todd, and families - My deepest condolences at this time. I have many fond memories of your Mom (and Dad, too) from my childhood and teen years at Glad Tidings. I also remember the special friendship that our parents shared over the years. There is certainly more beautiful music in heaven - they have a new organist up there. Know that Doris and Bob are together again, with the Lord.
