Nicole Cagle Obituary

Nicole Marie Hodgins Cagle, 39, died peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2009, after a courageous five year battle with breast cancer. She was born on April 9, 1970, in Flin Flon, Manitoba Canada. She was a graduate of Cave Spring High School, 1988, and Radford University, 1992, where she was a founding sister of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. She was married to Michael Cagle on July 10, 1992 at Our Lady of Nazareth Church, and they lived in Orlando, Fla. and Charlotte, N.C. before settling in Roanoke. In Roanoke she was actively involved in the activities at Penn Forest Elementary School, American Cancer Society, Pink Ribbon Gathering, and Relay For Life. Also surviving Nicole are her in-laws, Larry and Joyce Cagle, of Lynchburg; her brother-in-law and family in Greenville, S.C., an aunt and uncle in California, several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins in Canada. The family would especially like to thank Dr. William Fintel and the nurses and staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care as well as the nurses and staff at Lewis Gale Hospital 6 West who provided wonderful and compassionate care. Words cannot begin to express our gratitude for all the meals and support from our wonderful families, friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends on June 15, 2009 at 5 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, and the funeral will be at Our Lady of Nazareth Church on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 2 p.m. Reception to follow. We knew about Nicole from her aunt
Zora, a very good friend of ours,
and although we had met only once,
it was evident how much she loved
her family and her friends.
She had great courage and showed a
great serenity.
She is now in Heaven as a new Angel.
We only hope God will give her family
strenght in this difficult time.
We can only pray for them and wish
them well always.

I heard Nicole speak at the "Pajama Jam" this past fall. She was an inspiration to me as I am a Breast Cancer survivor. God has taken her to a much better place, and I pray her family will find peace with that.

Mike, Andrew and Matthew,
I only met Nicole a few months ago at Penn Forest and did not know how long she had been sick but I could see her pain yet feel her strength and her will to survive. And the three men in her life were always strong and lived life to the fullest. From reading the other entries here I have learned why and how you were all so strong for her, she wanted you to be. Because she was a strong person and had a strong spirit and personality. I pray for the three of you and the rest of your family to continue to stay strong through this difficult time, knowing that she is at peace with God. Please do not hesitate to contact Paul or I if you need anything at all.

Mike, Andrew, Matthew and Family,

Please accept our sincerest condolenses at this difficult time. Nicole was "team Mom" when our son, Brendan, played T-ball with Andrew. She was always so active you would never have thought she was ill. We admired her for her zest for life, her devotion to her family and her courage to face battles. You all have been in our prayers for quite some time and we will continue to pray for you. Rest assured that Nicole is with our Heavenly Father and she is in GREAT hands. May God be with you all!!!

Many Blessings,

I am deeply sadden by the loss of my dear friend, Nicole, but I feel so fortunate to have known and loved her. She never met a stranger. She always made you feel better about yourself. And she never let you feel sorry for her. I can only try to live my life as she did - with courage, compassion and joie de vivre. I will miss my friend. She was a gift.

Although I never had the chance to meet Nicole personally, I did have the privilege of hearing her speak at last year's Pajama Jam. I was overwhelmed and inspired by her spirit, zest for life, and determination to not only beat this horrible disease but to also make the most out of every minute given to her. Nicole was an amazing lady, and I'm very thankful that I had the opportunity to hear her speak. I pray that her family and friends will find some small comfort in knowing that she was an inspiration to so many. May God bless and comfort you all during this time.

Nicole was such a great friend. I smile while thinking of the memories. We went to the same high school and college. I was glad when she moved back to Roanoke. She was fun with a warm personality. Always positive. I'm inspired how she helped others with their battles while fighting her own. She loved her family and being a mother. Nicole wouldn't want us to be sad. My heart goes out to Mike, her kids, other family members and friends. Blessings and hugs.

Dear Mike,
The pain in my heart for you and the boys is so heavy. I am just filled with grief right now. I love-love-loved her like a little sister from the day I met you two when we lived in Roanoke. I miss and cherish those days, and remember so clearly your joy when Andrew was born. Being part of your lives was truly a gift and a honored blessing for us. I love you all so much, and I simply do not have words, Mike, I'm sorry. Nicole was just so sparkly, and she will shine down on all of us from Heaven for all time until we can be with her again. All our love, The Cirbee Family

I only knew of Nicky and her courageous battle with cancer through her Aunt Zora Apt in San Rafael, Ca. Zora always spoke of Nicky with such love and admiration. I felt as if I knew her and wore with pride a bracelet that Zora gave me which Nicky had made.
My sympathy goes out to Zora and Richard, Bev and Zinka and of course, Nicky's husband, beautiful children and family. God bless you, and be with you all.

Your family has been, and will continue to be in the prayers of many people. I knew Nicole through friends, but her life, her courage, and her wonderful spirit have touched mine in a very deep and real way. She will be missed by all. May God bless and keep your whole family. Anne Kidd

To the Family of Nicole-
There are hardly words to express my emotion over the loss of Nicole. She and I were founding sisters of the Epsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority at Radford University in 1989...and we were fast friends from Day One. And as founding sisters, we got to know a lot about each other... and there was only reason to love her! Her shining spirit and friendliness, goofy humor, and enthusiasm was absolutely contagious! We just reconnected via Facebook just a few weeks ago- and I was SO excited to see her again! Now I will just miss her dearly.... But my dear sister Nicole is always in my heart. Please accept my condolences and know that she made such a wonderful impression on SO many. Bless you all.
