Charles Caldwell Obituary

Charles Ray Caldwell, 81, of Roanoke, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 14, 2009. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Ray Caldwell Sr. and Ethel Madge Blankenship Caldwell, one grandson, DJ Henley Jr., and his son-in-law, Howard "Stick" Rowe. Ray was a kind and gentle man who always put his family first. His sense of humor brought laughter to his family and to all who knew him. He was employed at Sears Roebuck and Company for 40 years as Receiving Manager. He and his wife "Pete" joined Fairview United Methodist Church in 1957 and have remained active ever since. Ray was an avid sports fan and loved to watch his favorite NFL team, the Washington Redskins. He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Della "Pete" Caldwell; his daughter, Vickie Caldwell Rowe; his two sons, Mike and wife, Darlene Caldwell, and Jerry Caldwell, all are from Roanoke. He also leaves behind one grandson, Scott Rowe and his wife, Beth, of Midlothian, Va.; as well as, one sister, Lois and her husband, Elmer Hylton. Also left to grieve his loss are many nieces and nephews, his Sears friends, and a loving and caring church family. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Robert Seamon, Dr. John Starr, Dr. Phillip T. Shiner, and the nursing staff of 7 floor South at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. We appreciate the loving care and attention you gave to Dad throughout his illness. Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel and the celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cheryl Harrison-Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Fair View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Fairview United Methodist Church at 1310 Van Buren Street, NW, Roanoke, Va. 24017.

To the family of Charles Ray Caldwell, my cousin. I never new that my father's Uncle Charlie had a family. My father, Bill Caldwell, and his parents William Bowyer and Daisy Caldwell, moved to Northern Virginia and eventually lost track of family. I am Bill's daughter, Lisa. I would have dearly loved to have met Charles and to have gotten to know him. I am so, so, sorry for your loss. (My father passed two years ago.) Please know that some time in the future, I would love to meet you.

Dear Pete and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. It has been years since we were next door neighbors and Ray and Chuck were co-workers at Sears. We have moved to Tega Cay, SC and love it down here. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Much love,
Shirley and Chuck Hillman
