Evelyn Smith Obituary

Evelyn Minnie Smith, 88, of Bedford, Va., passed away in Oakwood Manor on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. She was born on April 26, 1921, in Bedford County. She was a faithful member of Thaxton Baptist Church. She worked at Rubatex for 33 years and retired in 1983. Evelyn loved her yard work more than most people love to relax. She pushed mowed her own yard (almost two acres) until she was 82. Even then, she would do the "trimming" with the push mower while one of her nieces/nephews used the riding mower. One of her favorite things to do was to collect seeds from her flowers and share them with others. She took great pride in her flower collection. Many of us today have beautiful flower beds because of her generosity. She's finally at home with the Lord, her parents, and two brothers. Surviving are three sisters, Doris Scott, Marie Rutoskey, and Lucille Stevens; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Thaxton Baptist Church Building Fund. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009, at Thaxton Baptist Church with Dr. Eldridge Cullum officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements by BurchMessier Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Bedford, Va., 540-586-7360.
