Albert Martin Obituary

Albert Akers (A.A.) Martin, 88, of Roanoke, Va., son of late George A. and Elizabeth H. Martin, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 19, 2009. "Buddy" was the last survivor of 16 children. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and retired as a Yard Engineer at Norfolk Southern Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Fuller Martin, with whom he had just celebrated 54 years of marriage on June 18th. He described her as wonderful, loving, and the jewel of all she met. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Anne Elizabeth Willard and Jeff; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Grace Royal and Darrell; a niece whom he considered a daughter, Darlene B. Ratliff; and a son-in-law, Dewey Lilly. "Poppie" will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Catherine Lilly, Olivia Royal, Heather Royal, Jacob Willard and Deanna Royal. He will join his oldest daughter, Martha Elaine Lilly, who is waiting for him in Heaven. He is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Mildred F. Sink. He always tried to do as much or more for others as they did for him. His wishes were that his friends would come and celebrate his past journey through life and the start of his next journey. Friends and family are welcome to visit at Oakey's South Chapel on Sunday, June 21, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in his honor 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009, at Brambleton Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Brambleton Baptist Church, 4122 Cresthill Drive, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
