George David Obituary

George T. David Sr., 88, of Union Hall, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 19, 2009, after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Coast Guard. He was preceded in death by father and mother, Lester Thomas and Ethel Ellis David; one daughter, Vickie Lynn David; and brother-in-law, Randolph Hairfield. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ruth Horsley David; two sons, George T. Jr. (Sarah), Frankie (Denise); three daughters, Bonnie Brooks (Perry), Jeannie, Lisa Mitchell (Crosstie); grandchildren, Beth Whitehead (Scott), Leigh David-Mizak (Greg), Ben David, Angela Hurley (Stevie), Stephanie and Ryan David, Heather Parker (Bucky); great-grandchildren, Michael, Emory, Connor, Samantha and Christopher; one sister, Jessie David Hairfield; and a special and faithful pet, Fancy (Tootie). George was honored with the Carnegie Hero Fund Award for heroism in saving two lives from the New River. George retired from working his life on heavy equipment to enjoy spending time on his family farm. The family would like to thank Carilion Hospice of Franklin County for their gentle hand during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Central & Western VA Chapter of Alzheimer Assoc., 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. Funeral services will be conducted from Lynch Conner-Bowman Chapel 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009, with the Rev. David Long officiating. Interment will follow in the David Family Cemetery at the home. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home, 140 Floyd Ave., Rocky Mount., lynchconnerbowman.com.
