Susan Rivers Obituary

Susan Diane (Patterson) Rivers, 58, of Roanoke County, Va., went to be with her eternal Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 21, 2009, following a courageous battle with multiple organ failure. Sue was born in Richmond, Va., on February 17, 1951, moving to Roanoke in 1962. She graduated from Cave Spring High School in 1969 and was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem, Va., holding many positions throughout her career, retiring in 2001 as Chief of Volunteer Services. Sue always had a special place in her heart for her veterans. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Michael R. Patterson and Ester Lacy Patterson; and her brother, Michael R. Patterson Jr. She is survived by her loving, devoted husband and best friend, Daniel (Danny) Rivers; and their two very special canine children, Hobo (Lil' Man) and Murdock. Sue is also survived by one sister, Carolyn (Lewis) Wilson, of Roanoke; a niece, Amy (David) Hartung; and two greatnieces, Sydney Taylor and Morgan Lacy Hartung, all of Belleville, Ill. Also surviving Sue is her very special uncle and aunt, Joe and Merle Patterson, of Richmond. She is survived by her mother-in-law, Lucy Rivers; brothers-in-law, the Rev. James (Dee) Rivers, of Roanoke, Mike (Kathleen) Rivers of New Jersey, and Scott (Tammy) Rivers of North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Patti Rivers of Florida; plus many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at at noon on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Sherwood Cemetery, with the Rev. James Rivers officiating. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

Dear Danny & Family, I have been thinking all day about how much fun Sue and I had in Voluntary, we literally laughed all day everyday. I am so sorry for your loss, it is everyone's loss. I think about her often and will continue to.
