Harry Stone Obituary

Harry Richardson Stone, formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away on June 20, 2009, at the age of 94. He died in Spokane, Wash. Harry was born in Lunenberg County, Va., on August 18, 1914. He proudly served his country in the Army 176th Infantry in the European theater in World War II. Harry landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1944 D-Day invasion and served in France, Belgium and Germany before returning to the United States in 1945. He married Lucille Horne in 1946, and they lived and worked in Northern Virginia for many years. In 1971, they retired and moved to Lake James, N.C., where they founded Stone Realty Company. Harry helped found and was first president of the McDowell Board of Realtors and was active in the Rotary Club in Marion, N.C. After enjoying life on Lake James for many years, Harry and Lucille retired again and moved to Roanoke, Va. In 1996, they moved to Spokane to live near their only daughter and granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, C. Hubert Horne and his wife, Louise S. Horne. Harry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucille Horne Stone, of Spokane; daughter, Linda Stone, of Spokane; granddaughter, Tegra Stone Nuess, of Seattle; and sister, Lillie Griffith, of South Hill, Va.; nephew and wife, Rev. Richard H. and Patricia K. Horne, Christiansburg, Va.; great-niece and husband, Heather Leveta Horne and Eric Brown, of Orlando, Fla.; great-nephew and family, Brian R.H. Horne and wife, Amy H. Horne, and their children, Rachel, Grayce, Quinn and Makenna, Christiansburg, Va. The family wishes to express its appreciation to Patti Johnson and her special team of caregivers for their caring assistance. Burial will take place in Christiansburg at a later date.
