Conwell Jones Obituary

Conwell Jones, 89, of Washington, D.C., and formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday, June, 29, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Lillie Mae Jones; godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Mitchell; and brother, Winston N. Jones. He joined Mt. Zion AME Church under the Rev. James S. Hatcher. He graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1938 and Bluefield State College in 1942 with a degree in health and physical education. In 1939, he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. As a young man he was employed at the Hotel Roanoke and the Patrick Henry of which he always had fond memories. He moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a taxi cab driver while working for the United States government. Conwell's last employment in the government was in the civil rights division. He was an avid golfer, reader and taught himself to swim at the age of 65 years old. He leaves to rejoice in memories his wife, Mildred Turner Jones; sister, Lessie J. Polk, of Roanoke; godson, Troy D. (Laurie) Manns, of Glen Allen, Va.; nephew, Ralph (Cynthia) Polk, of Danville, Va.; nieces, Delores (the Rev. William Douglas Sr.), of Kingsport, Tenn., Gloria Polk Manns, of Roanoke, Minerva Polk, of Greensboro, N.C., and Althea B. Polk, of Roanoke; greatnephews, Ralph and Ryan (Marlene) Polk, of Danville, Va., Sean (Stephanie) Polk, of Upper Marlboro, Md., James D. Polk Jr., of Roanoke, and the Rev. Ray Douglas Jr., of Washington, D.C.; great-nieces, April Walker, of Greensboro, N.C., Tonja Mullins, Cicely (Jermaine) Manns-Hardy, and Andre Douglas, all of Roanoke, and Kristin Douglas, of Kingsport, Tenn.; as well as other greatgreat-nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2009, at Christ United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Marshall's Funeral Home, Inc., 4308 Suitland Road, Suitland, Md. 20740.
