Joyce Kirk Obituary

Joyce Tyree Kirk, of Roanoke, Va., died in her home on Sunday, July 5, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born January 24, 1925, in Lynchburg, Va. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Va., attended Virginia Intermont College and obtained her nursing degree from the University of Virginia. She married her high school sweetheart, J.W. (Bill) Kirk Jr., upon his return from serving in the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific during World War II. Joyce and Bill celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage together before he preceded her in death in 1999. Joyce enjoyed every day of her blessed life, and most of all treasured her time with friends and family. Her zest for life was always present as was her elegant and gracious style. Her impressive array of artistic works illustrate both her passion for the beach and the beauty of the world through her eyes. She is survived by her daughter, Robyn Kirk Heath, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; her son, J.W. (Bill) Kirk Ill and his wife, Shireen, of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Catherine Joyce Cannon and husband, Sam, of Roanoke, Heather Teems and husband, David, of Pawleys Island, S.C., Kelly Kirk, of Charlottesville, Va., and Kaitlin Joyce Kirk, a student in Huntington, W.Va.; her great-grandchildren, Tristan and Kirklyn, of Pawleys Island, S.C., and Alexa, Emme and Chloe of Roanoke. Friends are invited to visit with the family at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, on Thursday, July 9, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Joyce's life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Second Presbyterian Church with Dr. George Anderson, Gerald Carter and Dr. William Klein officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kirk Family YMCA, 520 Church Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24016. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.

Dear Cathy,
My thoughts are with you and your entire family during this difficult time. I know Joy was a very important and loving influence in your life. I had the opportunity to meet Joy on several occasions over the past 20 years. I remember the time (2 yrs ago) when Julie and I were visiting you in Roanoke, Joy stopped by to say hello. She brought along a selection of dresses for your girls to choose from. The girls were thrilled as they put on a fashion show for all of us. It wasn't a huge life event but it sure was an indication of how Joy was a part of your family's everyday life. She will live forever in all of you. Now you have your own personal guardian angel.

Dear Mr. Kirk,III and family:

I want to express my deepest sympathy of the passing of your mother. A mother's love is "unconditional and everlasting." May each of you find comfort and strength in knowing what she stood for with fondest memories.
Continue to be encouraged in the "Lord" and remember his promise as he will never leave nor forsake his children.

My sincere condolences,
