Clifford C. Thornton

Clifford C. Thornton, 84, of Peterstown, W.Va., passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. Born September 27, 1924, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Sylvania Muncy Thornton. Clifford was a mechanic for 34 years, a member of the International Pentecostal Church of Christ in Lindside and a World War II United States Army Veteran receiving a Purple Heart. He was a patriot, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a great man. In addition to his parents, Clifford was preceded in death in by a son, Larry Thornton; three brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen D. Thornton; his son, Gary Thornton and wife, Kathy, of Vinton, Va.; a grandson, Matthew Thornton and wife, Jaime, of Chicago, Ill.; a granddaughter, Kari Thornton, of Vinton, Va.; two sistersin-law, Sylvia Eastburn and Julie Wood; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the Peterstown Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va., with Barry Harper officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 p.m. Military Rites will be held by Pembroke VFW Post #311, Narrows VFW Post #6000, Narrows American Legion Post #68 and Peterstown Rowe Jones Post #145.
