One of my dearest librarians and friend. I will cherish the times we worked together and laughed and planned for the children and YA of Roanoke..we are children's book vendors
for Roanoke City for over twenty years.
I wonder if the city realizes that we have lost one of the greatest advocates
for young people and libraries. A dedicated, devoted, professional and
a loving, giving lady..I will miss you,
friend..I will always remember you in your floppy hat with a picture book opened, inviting the children to the world of books and reading. It is hard
to say good-bye but we used to say that
we would see each other again in heaven, she loved her family so much
and loved her work and the children of Roanoke.

May many happy memories bring you smiles in remembrance of Kathy. I didn't know Kathy but had the opportunity to meet her at many regional library meetings and workshops. She always had a smile and was a friendly presence - youth services is always a fun part of library service but Kathy seemed to really enjoy what she did. I know she will be missed in the Roanoke system.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Curtis and Jennifer, Members of both the Powell and Carter Families,
It is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest sympathy to the all of you. I was devastated when I was informed about the passing of my friend, former co-worker and sorority sister.
Kathy and I worked together at the Roanoke City Public Library System for more than ten years. It is truly rare to be able to come to work, enjoy what you do and find a co-worker who is just as passionate about what she does as you. Kathy was a gifted and talented person but most importantly Kathy was a kind, compassionate and giving Christian friend. We both talked constantly and developed programs and services that we would empower young people throughout the City of Roanoke. I was so proud of Kathy when she graduated from Radford Univ and then she decided to go to library school. She had made so many achievements throughout her personal and professioanl career. Kathy and I both celebrated our birthdays on January 31 and we looked forward to treating each other with a dinner and a special gift. Her personality was very comforting to me and she always spoke with smile on her face. Kathy called me Tuesday, July 14 and we talked and laughed for an hour about the olds days and about some pictures she found of me working in the library. I will always cherish our last conversation together. I can go on and on because we shared a lot about ourselves to each other. To know Soror Kathy was to LOVE her. May God continue to comfort you all.
Sincerely yours,
Demetria Tucker

I am so sorry to hear of Kathy's passing and extend to you my deepest sympathy. I will always remember our time working together at Roanoke Public Library and how proud I was of her when she went back to college for her degree. Kathy's gift to me when I retired was a tape by Diamond Rio and her best wishes. She had such a beautiful spirit that inspired and blessed those who worked with her. She loved both of you so very much and I pray you will find comfort in knowing that her love still lives in your heart.

To Curtis,Jennifer and the Powell Family.
We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Kathy. She was a rare fine devoted to not only her family but also to friends,co-workers and all who were lucky enough to cross her path in life.We go a few years back, friends since the start of elementary school which has lasted a life time. Even after my daughter was old enough to work she was blessed to work with her and also get to know her and thought as much of her as I did.
Yes we all were blessed to have her in our lives for as long as we did.We all share your pain and are praying for each of you not only now but in the days ahead.I can remember when her Mother passed away we were in elementary school then and she was so strong. She has always been such an amazing lady that will be missed by many.I could go on and on and still would never finish telling about the good old days. Her soft spoken voice but yet stern beautiful inside and out.I know that above all she loved God and put him first in all that she did so today the angels are rejoicing in heaven that she has arrived. If the Wade Family can do anything at all we are hear for you.

In memory of one of God’s true angels … Mrs. Kathy Elaine Powell Carter
For Kathy…
I thank God for honoring me with the privilege of calling you my aunt. You were the person who successfully explained death to me when Grandma Powell passed away many years ago. My siblings, cousins and I spent many evenings listening to you read from the books that lined your bedroom walls. I used to love to read “Mad” Magazine with you and those “corny” romance novels. You took me, Sylvia, and Dawn to our first concert at the Roanoke Civic Center. I will never forget K.C. and the Sunshine Band. I remember our first outing with “Uncle” Curtis … you guys took us to Dixie Caverns …You listened patiently whenever I called to talk about my college sweetheart who became my husband. I remember coming to Roanoke to meet Jennifer and how you allowed me to bathe her in the kitchen sink. I admired everything about you and I LOVE you so much. I will miss you always! Your niece, Janice Marie Whorley Dinkins
