James Arthur Combs Sr. obituary, Roanoke Valley, VA

James Combs Obituary

James Arthur Combs Sr., 93, of Roanoke County, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. He was a native of Wise County, Virginia, and retired as Division Superintendent from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Washington, D.C. after 35 years of service, and later as Credit Manager for Powers Fence Company of Roanoke after 10 years service. He served two and one half years in the U.S. Army. He was of the Protestant faith, being a member of Palisades Community Church in Washington, D.C. Mr. Combs was a 32nd Degree Mason, being a member of Appalachia Lodge #229 A.F. & A.M. in Appalachia, Va. He was also a member of the Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple of the Shrine. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Blue Hills Golf Club. He had been an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Beckner Combs and his second wife, Nancy Conway Combs. He is survived by his sons, Stephen C. Combs, Wilmington, N.C., James A. Combs Jr., Alexandria, Va.; daughters, Jody C. Duggan, Aiken, S.C., Sharon C. McMichael, Bunker Hill, W.Va.; a half sister, Shirley Parton, Knoxville, Tenn.; stepsons, H. Vincent Conway Jr., Newport News, Va., James M. Conway, Roanoke, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mary C. Buffkin, Crossville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. at 12 noon Friday, August 7, 2009. Masonic Rites will follow there in the chapel. Private family interment will follow in St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately before the services at Oakey's South Chapel. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals, c/o Kazim Temple, 628 Campbell Ave. S.W, Roanoke, Va. 24016. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel. 1-540-989-3131.
