Ruel Wood Obituary

Ruel Mauyer Wood, 87, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009. He was a veteran of World War II in the first Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy and was awarded a bronze star and a purple heart. Mr. Wood was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He was also a lifetime member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and was a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Carter Wood; and also two sisters, Glendola and Versie. Surviving is a sister, Eleanor Newcomb, of Norfolk; four children, Brenda Hollyfield and husband, Bobby, Booneville, N.C., Donald Wood, Roanoke, Randal Wood and wife, Linda, Roanoke, and Alisa Wood-Walters and husband, Doug, Portland, Oregon; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The Wood family would like to thank the staff at the Virginia Veterans Care Center and also at the VA Medical Center for the excellent care their dad received over the past several years. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Burial to follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 982-2221.
