Robert Handy Obituary

Robert Dalton (Bob) Handy, 78, of Hardy, Ky., passed away on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2009, at the Pikeville Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1931, in Stuart, Va., the son of the late Fernando and Roberta Dalton Handy. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Emma Yates; and two brothers, Frank Handy and Brooks Handy. He worked for the Norfolk and Southern Railway as a carman, foreman and wreck master for 35 years. He was a sergeant first class in the United States Army serving in the Korean War during which time he was awarded the Bronze Star medal. He was a proud member of the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson where he served as an elder and a member of the Men's Group of the church. Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Gloria Divers Handy; two sons, Jeffrey Dalton (Dlorah) Handy, of Ball Fork, Ky., and Dale Johns (Linda) Handy, of Fairlawn, Va.; four grandchildren who lovingly called him "Bobby," Kelly Faith (Steve) Mahon, Derek Johns Handy, Jeffrey Adam Handy, and Zachary Paul Handy; one sister, Betty (Earl) Pugh, of Madison Heights, Va.; brother, Sam Handy, of Roanoke, Va.; and his mother-in-law, Elsie Johns Divers, of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamson, with Vaughn Smith and Mark Helton officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. Visitation was held on Friday evening, August 14, 2009, from 6 until 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Belfry. Grandsons and men of the Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers. R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky., is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences at www.rerogersfuneralhome.com
