Catherine Moss Obituary

Catherine Simmons Moss, 92, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Blacksburg on August 3, 2009, under the care of Good Samaritan Hospice. Born October 30, 1916, in Chester, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Alice Vanessa Brookman and Charles Edwin Simmons I. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Edmund Moss; brothers, Eugene and Charles Simmons; and sister, Louise Simmons Pate. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1933 and was married to Jack Edmund Moss for 64 years. Catherine was a faithful army wife joining her husband in Manila (Philippines) upon the end of World War II, also joining him on tours in Tokyo, Ft. Riley, Kansas, and then to Poiters, France. Catherine attended nursing school at Orlando Memorial Hospital and loved the nursing profession, feeling that it was a true calling. She was a member of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Titusville, Fla. Throughout her husband's army career, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, was also a volunteer for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association, and she was a poll worker in Orlando, Fla. Surviving are her daughter, Judith Ann Pobjecky and husband, the Rev. Richard Pobjecky; her son, Winston Tate and wife, Donna Tate; beloved grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on September 4, 2009, in Arlington National Cemetery with her son-in-law, the Rev. Richard Pobjecky, officiating. The family wishes to thank all those who ministered to Catherine and her family during this past year by their prayers and presence.
