Dorothy Moses Obituary

Dorothy Jeanne Lilly (Nannie) Moses, 87, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 26, 2009.
Jeanne was born in Beckley, W.Va., on July 3, 1922, the first child of A.W. Lilly and Irene Huffman Lilly. Her marriage to Joseph B. Moses in 1947, lasted for 56 years until his death in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederick R. Lilly; and sister, Patricia Lilly Wilson.
Jeanne is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah (Tommy) Lane, Cynthia (Roger) Hofford, and Jo Anne (Jeff) Shaver. Her grandchildren are Heather (Chris) O'Neal, Diane Lane, Laura Hofford, Brandon Shaver, Kelly Shaver, and Stephen Hardy. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; her brother, Edwin R. Lilly, sister-in-law, Lois (Frederick) Lilly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jeanne was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family, whom she dearly loved. She was a faithful member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church for 49 years, willingly serving her Lord and the community as church clerk for 31 years, and in many other volunteer activities. Jeanne was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Her life reflected a favorite verse, 2 Timothy 2:15. Jeanne loved gospel music and was a special fan of Bill Gaither. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed her hobby for many years. She will be greatly missed by her family and by all who were privileged to know her.

The family would like to thank Kathy Moses, MSW, Bridgette, Mary and Jennifer, and the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for the care and concern given to their mother and to their family.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Andy H. Rice Sr. and the Rev. Shawn Dobbins officiating. The interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Preston Oaks Baptist Church or to Mineral Springs Baptist Church.

Jeanne's faith was strong and vibrant throughout her life and is described best by the following quote from evangelist Dwight Lyman Moody:

"Some day you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody of East Northfield, is dead. Don't you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now; I shall have gone up higher, that is all, out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body."

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899)
