William Kelley Obituary

William Greer Kelley Sr., 85, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Richmond, Va., died on Thursday, August 27, 2009. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on September 20, 1923, the sixth child of eight to the late George L. and Elsie P. Kelley. He is preceded in death by his sons, William G. Kelley Jr. and Mark G. Kelley; brother, George L. Kelley Jr.; sisters, Nina A. Williamson and Micky Kelley; and special friend, Robert Conrad Eanes. Mr. Kelley was a graduate of North Carolina State University and served his country faithfully as a first lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II and Korea. He was president of Sash, Door and Glass in Richmond and loved golf, traveling, reading and crossword puzzles. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sylvia Oakes Kelley; children, Walter Stuart Dudley and wife, Penny, and Joeylynn Patton; grandchildren, Aaron Blake Patton, Grace Olivia Patton, both of Roanoke and their father, Tommy Patton, and Elizabeth Greer Kelley, of Richmond; brothers, Rush T. Kelley, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael A. Kelley, of St. Charles, Mo., and Richard P. Kelley, of Rural Hall, N.C.; sister, Martha A. Fare, of Bellewscreek, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009, at Oakey's South Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the family home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity in Bill's memory. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

Bill was a swell guy who told it like it was. Was always amazed how he managed to stay afloat when he swam at the Gator pool, but he kept on stroking!
