Sue McChesney Smith

Sue McChesney Smith, 86, of Roanoke, Va., died on Saturday, September 12, 2009. She was born on July 22, 1923, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late John McBride and Mamie Timberlake McChesney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers; and one sister. Mrs. Smith had a lifelong interest in helping individuals with disabilities. For many years she served as a substitute teacher in the Carroll County School System. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Green Ridge Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Howard E. Smith; son, Douglas M. Smith and wife, Tammy, of Woodlawn; daughter, Evelyn Smith Jordan, of Salem; grandchildren, Jessica A. Jordan, Phillip D. Smith, Matthew S. Jordan, Patrick H. Smith and Jennifer L. Jordan; great-grandchild, Sierra N. Jordan; sisters-in-law, Kathleen T. McChesney, Annabelle H. McChesney, Priscilla Snyder, and Diane Zambacca; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Organ Fund at Green Ridge Presbyterian Church, 7640 Alpine Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019 or to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road #106, Roanoke, Va. 24018. A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Green Ridge Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Pattie Sewell.
