George Merriman Obituary

George Willis Merriman, 92, of Merriman Road, Fieldale, Va., passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2009, in the Stanleytown Health & Rehab Center, Bassett, Va. He was born on July 31, 1917, in Preston, Va., to the late Charles Lee Merriman and Mary Lou Clark Merriman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Christine Via Merriman, on December 17, 2007; brothers, J. William Merriman, Ernest L. "Buck" Merriman; and sisters, Lucy M. Shelton, Sue M. Wilkinson, Virginia M. Compton and Pauline M. Barrow. Mr. Merriman was a First Sergeant in the United States Army serving during World War II. He was a longtime member of the Fieldale Baptist Church and retired from SunTrust Bank with over 30 years of service. He also served on the board of the Fieldale Insurance Agency and was a past member of the Collinsville Lions Club and the former Fieldale Rotary Club. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and their families. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009, at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor Richard Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to the Fieldale Baptist Church "General Fund," P.O. Box 98, Fieldale, Va. 24089 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory, Martinsville, Va., is serving the Merriman family.
